Sacred narrative
Christian paintings and biblical stories
Biblical paintings condense long narratives into a single decisive moment: an expulsion, an annunciation, an act of devotion or a scene of suffering. Gesture and direction of gaze help the viewer reconstruct what happened before and what will happen next.
Christian paintings also served specific settings and practices. An altarpiece, private devotional image and large public commission address different viewers, distances and rituals. Scale and original location are therefore part of the meaning.
